Greater Dallas Korean School (GDKS) celebrated the Korean '3.1 Independence Movement Day' last Saturday, March 3rd at the GDKS Richardson Campus.

March 1st of 1919 is the day when the Korean people declared their independence from the Japanese colonization. This day served as a catalyst for the beginning of Korea’s provisional government, which was ultimately established on April 13th, 1919.

The GDKS students re-enacted the independence movement and watched video clips about the '3.1 Independence Movement Day'. They also watched video clips of late Gi Jung Son and Tae Hwan Park.

Gi Jung Son was a Korean-born marathoner who won the gold medal at the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympic Games. Because Korea was under the Japanese rule at that time, Son stood on the podium as a Japanese national and credit for the gold medal went to Japan.

Tae Hwan Park is a Korean swimmer who has won multiple gold medals at various international competitions, including the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. Swimming has always been an 'unchartered territory' in the Korean sports history. Swimming is considered by many Koreans as an 'elite sport.' Park’s achievement in swimming symbolizes the Korea’s advancement as a nation.

GDKS’ '3.1 Independence Movement Day' celebration gave the students a chance to experience a piece of Korean history and solidify their identity as Korean-Americans.
